The Station: FAQs

"How will my character arrive?"

Upon acceptance to the game, each character will be given a small blurb unique to their character's situation and how they wake. If not discussed with a player before hand, a mod will come up with the way they appear in the game. Be prepared for hiliarty, danger, embarrassment, or some combination of them!

Any pet of a character apped in will appear with them. Strangely, in Section 2 in the personal quarters, there seems to be a room already labeled with your character's name...

"How do the communicators work?"

Every person, regardless of how they come to the Station, gains a communication device. It is transparent and hooks automatically into the Station's systems, but it has a limited distance. The Station will boost it enough to communicate to any docked ship or anywhere in the Station, and it has enough power to communicate anywhere on a ship, but when the ships undock the communicator will stop working after a certain distance. Any normal communicators on ship will function as normal.

A player may communicate on an open channel, private channel, or a 'chat channel' limited to whom they bring into it. They may communicate via video, audio, or text or any combination of the three. When a character is contacted, a stylized symbol will appear to indicate who is on the other end. Players may chose their character's own unique symbol. It will not, however, reveal their name, face, or location unless offered. (Little Mod note: We'd gently nudge players to turn their comm symbol into an icon for future use! These icons will be listed on the taken page.)

Anything a typical smart phone can do, so can one of the Station's comms. They may be used to locate others on the ship IF that player does not turn their locator off. Each comes with a map of the Station and the ability to tap the Station's systems, to a limited degree.

Comms are otherwise very much personalizable. Do what you will with them!

"What happens if my communicator breaks/gets lost/is eaten by a swamp?"

If it merely breaks, you could find someone who is able to repair it by actually manually repairing it (even one of the Station's crew may be willing to help) but note that magical fixes seem to heavily interfere with the Station's ability to communicate with the comm and well, you might end up in the Power Core when you were trying to get to the Mess Hall.

If it's broken beyond repair or gone, you will have to see Gryf in the supplies room to either buy or barter a new one.

"Are there jobs for me on the Station or a ship?"

Gryf is always looking for help. She can't keep up with the whole of the Station by herself, and won't look away from someone who wants to earn some supplies or credit.

"How do I earn credits/get supplies?"

Credits are the base currency of the Station. It is the kept track by the Station's account, viewable through a person's comm. To earn credits as an individual, you will need to get jobs through the Station, work with another player, or get a position on a ship.

Any character may start up their own business on the Station if they have the tools, goods, or talent. No crew member of the Station will stop another character from setting up shop.

Credits are used at the supplies room with its overload princess over seer, Gryf. The Station was designed to keep thousands and thousands of people happy, healthy, comfortable, and functioning and nearly anything you could want is somewhere in the warehouse and as it was once a trading hub for the Botharians, there is quite the stash of the unique, too. Everything has its price.

"Can I die and is it permanent?"

Oh, your character can most certainly die. In fact, there is a very high chance living in the Dead Space that it could happen. When a character dies, upon their wakening regardless of how they died, they will find they are missing a memory. It may not be an important one or it could be something very important - entirely up to the player. Someone on the Station may know a way to recover that missing memory. However, the more times a character has died, the greater the amount of memory taken and the harder it becomes to recover...

A character will appear where their body was taken, healed and whole, or in their room, waking as if from a nightmare.

"What sort of plot can we expect and can I make my own?"

While we do have a plot idea in mind, it will be influenced by the actions of the players and how the game is progressing. The Station is located in the Dead Space where any canon may flow from a Time River, thus it can bring absolutely anything. Individual events could be horrifying, dramatic, silly, or anything else we can dream up. Some events will be decidedly to push the game's plot forward while others will not have much if any effect on the over all plot.

Players are welcomed and encouraged to come up with their own plots! We would ask though that any player that wishes to open up a game-wide plot to come speak with the mods first - we will help to make sure it stays with game canon and can (and will!) offer more in depth aid (or terror) from the Station, its crew, or other world NPCs.

"So, what's out there?"

So you're ready to go EXPLORING! Great! ...Well, that's actually really great because the vast majority of the Dead Space is a complete unknown beyond the Station's sensors. There are three major things out in the Dead Space:

1) The Time Rivers
The Time Rivers range in size from as large as a doorway to the size of a large pond. Every single one flows 'down river' into the Dead Space, as if the Dead Space were a great ocean in space. One may attempt the dangerous trip of going up river, but somehow... they all return back into the Dead Space through a different exit. They vary in color and seem to slowly, very slowly, move through space. Going near some may have unique effects...

2) The Dead Ships
Floating remains of ships in the Dead Space are known as Dead Ships. These can be in various stages of repair from nearly obliterated (just pieces of a ship) to completely in tact - but none have any signs of life left on them, not even electronically. If a player wishes to find a Dead Ship, they must contact a mod who will roll a dice and pick from our bag of choices as to what the players find and we'll let you go from there!

3) Planets
While they are rare and very far apart, there are planets located in the Dead Space. Everyone can see the planet the Station orbits around, known as Bothaious, but the others are all unknown. Again, players that wish to find a planet must contact a mod who will roll a dice and chose from our list what is found. You are free to go from the limited info we give you - players are allowed to make up whatever they wish about that planet beyond the minor details we provide to start you off. This, along with the Dead Ships, are a huge way players can influence the game!

PLEASE NOTE: Some planets and Dead Ships will be EVENT STARTERS when they are located!

"What does the Station look like?"

You can see the outside of the Station HERE. Inside, the state of the Station is a mix of the incredible, beautiful, and run down. Elegant, designed to be an off planet home for a very advanced, rich race, the Station was once an incredible epitome of the Botharians' mastery of space. Now, so many years without proper maintenance, it has become slowly more and more run down.

Also, please see the Station Layout for more information on specific areas.

"How does game play work?"

Logs (closed to two or more people), open RP posts (open to anyone), comm posts (private or open) - anything in character will be posted to the Station [community profile] thestation. They must each be tagged with their appropriate tags - post: log, post: open rp, post: comm open, or post: comm private as well as with the name of the character that started the post (and highly encouraged to add more tags as more characters tag). If it a private/locked post, please list the characters included.

Anything out of character will be posted to the Station's OOC comm [community profile] thestation_ooc. They must be tagged with the player's ooc tag.

Logs will have the following general format:

"What are the age requirements for characters and players?"

While there is no age limitations for characters, we do require any player to be over the age of 18.

"What kind of ratings are there? Sex, drugs, and rock and roll!"

We allow any rating in this game, but there are some restrictions. ANY mature content must be beneath a cut and properly labeled as such. We have no particular issue against any kink or whatever you could plan to do, but the one we DO have issue with and will ban players for posting is pedophilia. Please do not play out sexual scenes with characters under the age of 16, thank you.

Okay, I have a couple of questions to hammer down.

Firstly though, some technical junk: One of the characters I'm considering is a Shadowrun technomancer. If you're not familiar, the best summation I have is she's a hacker whose whole life is lived in between the physical world and the matrix/digital world. I can go into more detail if needed, but that's the essentials.
ETA: Actually, related to that, because of the unique way Tehnomancers live, they themselves are a living communication device. In Shadowrun, they can 'feel' nodes in the matrix, especially things like communicators and such and interact with them through the matrix. Even if there's no 'digital world', would it be assumed that she could at least connect to the communicators, since they're basically wired between each other?

So, does the Station have what would be considered a matrix/digital world (be it the ship's own system or some weird thrumming... thing, or whatever), or would she basically lose that skillset upon arrival? I'll have a couple more questions if this is a yes.

Next, another character I'm considering is already an amnesiac. She retained her skills as a sniper/medic and several character quirks, but she doesn't know her own name or remember the past 20+ years. In the event of her dying and reviving, would she just lose something she gained in the more recent events, or would that be a special case in general?

Right, right. I'd expect to have to go into pretty thorough explanation of the mechanics as far as the whole thing. Mostly, I suppose, my question is relating to how she would react - to pull from our created world and give an example, when her Runners went to the dragon-plane, there was a matrix, but it was 'different' - it felt wrong, she couldn't connect and manipulate it the way she expected, and it was a generally anxiety-inducing event for her for the short duration of their stay. Having the 'feeling' of the matrix at all is a comfort, though - I just wanted to make sure whether or not she would be going through total shock of not having that sensation after so long.

Obviously, I don't expect just to have free reign of anything - that would be silly. Shadowrun, being a tabletop game, has a huge element of randomness to begin with and I'd like to keep that sensation should I app her to begin with. I'm cool with it being a handicap, too~

As for the second, she actually is both! She was a medic by trade, who then trained in her country's military as a sniper. The amnesia happened 6 years ago. Essentially, all she has from before (aside from her skills) are flasbhacks and a compulsion to leave a signature mark on her bullets. The 6 years that follow, she's basically remained a mystery, calling herself by the codename 'Ghost' and working with a covert group. Since she remembers next to nothing, she's tried to keep from making attachments in the now. If it's just a case of figuring out dying consequences based on her app, that's fine too! I just wondered if you had an idea/precedent/whatever for that beforehand.

Ahah well, they're actually both Shadowrun characters, I'm just trying to choose which one to go with. As far as OCs go, I'm prepared for that. o7 I guess I'll just figure out who and go from there, then~ This is the benefit to your GMs having a full-on wiki to pull from, sob
